For over 800 years, the Sala Silvermine was used by local miners to extract minerals, ores, and wealth. The mine was prized for its distinctive “Sala Ore”, which contained high concentrations of silver, and attracted Swedish hopefuls from all regions of the country. Eventually, these miners flipped the settlement into a municipality, which is currently named “Sala”. The mines have recently been converted into a luxurious resort, which is easily one of the best preserved underground settings. The Sala Silvermine consists of three prominent levels and even houses the world’s deepest hotel room. The first is situated 130 feet below ground and hosts a system of large caverns. Two hundred feet below ground, you’ll find the Sofia Magdalena mine, which is commonly used by the locals for weddings, and large social gatherings. But the real magic happens once you take the elevator down to 508 feet. At this particular level, you’ll be introduced to your hotel rooms and dining areas, along with some of the world’s finest geology. These hotel rooms are kept company with warm pockets of air and are placed among the mine’s most incredible attraction: underwater lakes.
